Hotel Information

Due to the weekend being super busy with Grand Am also happening, hotel rooms are super limited. We recommend booking hotels ASAP. Below are two room block options that we have been able to secure. They are available on a first come first serve basis. We suggest that if these don’t work, you also look at hotels on your own in the surrounding area including Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, Fargo, and Crookston. We recognize that some of those locations are not ideal, and we apologize for any inconvenience. It is the responsibility of each team, team member, and general manager to get the rooms you will need booked and paid for.

State Tournament Information

Student/Team Registration

Registration will begin on Friday, March 31st, at 10:00 am at the Alerus Center. The arena will open to the general public at 11:00 am. We will have tables in the entrance of the arena to register the students and teams. Opening ceremonies will begin at 12:00 pm.

We will have a bag for each student participant at the registration table with a jersey, name tag, and some fun swag! If a student is bringing their own equipment, they will be required to have it checked at registration.

Equipment

Fenworks will be providing a PC set-up that all players will be playing on. This includes a mouse, keyboard, and headset. Fenworks allows and strongly suggest players bring their own peripherals, so they feel more comfortable playing. This extends to mice, keyboards, controllers, and headsets. Players should not bring monitors or entire set-ups or consoles. Fenworks will have a few controllers available for players that need them, but it is strongly suggested if you require a controller to please bring your own an ensure you have the correct connecter to be used on a PC and that the controller is compatible with a PC.

For all the equipment that a student brings they should be fully capable and ready to set their equipment up in a timely manner and know if any software is needed and be read to download it. They will be allowed to do this but must be ready to do it quickly. All outside equipment will be inspected by Fenworks staff prior to use in tournament play.

The state tournament will be held in the main arena, and we will be sharing it with the Grand Am basketball tournament. All players that might feel overstimulated with sounds are encouraged to bring noise cancelling headphones/earmuffs. Fenworks will have a few pairs for students to borrow.

Account Information

For all titles, players should be prepared to alter any settings/keybinds they’ll need (in-game), in the case that they are not carried over from their primary account. Players are required to have their account information ready to be used so they can log into the games. Information about each specific game can be found below:

    • Rocket League
            • Fortnite
              • Players will need their Epic Games Login Information
              • If a player does not have an Epic Games login, they can follow these instructions to make one linked to their account https://www.rocketleague.com/activate/
                • VALORANT
                  • Players will need their Riot ID Login Information
                  • League of Legends
                    • Players will need their Riot ID Login Information
                    • Chess
                      • Chess will not be held online at the State Tournament. Physical boards will be used. All chess boards and clocks will be provided by Fenworks.

                      Ruleset for the State Tournament

All brackets will be played in a double elimination format. Once a team loses for the first time they will be dropped to the “elimination bracket”. Matches in the elimination bracket will be best of one. The finals of a bracket will be the undefeated team vs the team that makes it out of the elimination bracket.

In the final match, should the team from the elimination bracket win, the undefeated team still needs to lose again to be eliminated, thus, a final game will be played to determine the champion. Should the undefeated team win, the team from the elimination bracket will have received their second loss, eliminating them and no further games will be played with the undefeated team being champion.

Brackets will be released via email and on the Fenworks website.

                        • Rocket League
                          • Best of 5 matches. Standard regular season rules. 3v3 soccar.
                        • Chess
                          • Best of 3 games, until a player wins two games in the case of draws. Unlike the season, teams will compete over a physical board. The time control will be the same as the season, 10 minutes with a 2 second interval bonus time.
                        • Fortnite
                          • All 12 teams will compete in the same private lobby, playing no-build trios. The teams will compete for points following the same scoring as the regular season. The scoring can be found below. Five games will be played for teams to gain points, 2 games on day one of the tournament and 3 games on day two. Day one will include a practice game before the 2 games for points will occur.
                        • SUPER IMPORTANT: We will be enforcing a “grace period” where NO PLAYER VS PLAYER COMBAT IS ALLOWED. This is due to students competing in a private lobby with a lower player count (12 teams/36 players).
                          • The grace period will occur from the start of the game until the storm has fully shrunk for the 1st time. If this seems like still too large of a zone, Fenworks will adjust day 2 games if necessary.
                          • If a team breaks this rule, they will immediately receive 0 points for that game and be forced to exit that game. If a team breaks this rule a second time, their team will be automatically disqualified from the tournament. Additionally, if a team were to eliminate another player during this grace period the offending team will immediately be disqualified from the entire tournament. If your team is attacked during this grace period, you should first, immediately notify the nearest Fenworks observer and second, defend yourself as normal.
                          • Fenworks is the final arbiter and will decide when these punishments will be placed on a team.
                          • If your team is eliminated, please notify a Fenworks observer so they can record your team’s score.
                          • In the event two or more teams tie after the 5th game, the team with the highest overall placement will be given the win.
                          • In the event technical difficulties prevent Fenworks from operating the private lobby with all teams, Fenworks will default the tournament format to the same as the regular season.
                          • Scoring: Teams receive 1 point for every elimination their team gets. Teams also receive bonus points based on their placement:
                            • 1st place: 5 points
                            • 2nd place: 3 points
                            • 3rd place: 2 points
                            • 4th place: 1 point

                        • League of Legends
                          • Best of 3 matches. Standard regular season rules. 5v5 Summoner’s Rift.

                        • VALORANT
                          • Best of 3 matches. Standard regular season rules. 5v5
                          • The best of 1’s in the elimination bracket will follow this pick and ban system: Team A will ban two maps, Team B will ban 1 map and pick the side. The top team on the bracket is Team A, and the bottom team on the bracket is Team B
